Vaultwarden-Server Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Vaultwarden-Server image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


Vaultwarden lets individuals and teams run their own password manager, keeping passwords, passkeys, and other secrets under your own control instead of a third-party cloud service. It implements the Bitwarden server API in a lightweight Rust server, so official Bitwarden clients — browser extensions, mobile apps, desktop apps, and the CLI — work against it without modification, while using far less memory and CPU than the official server.


Try It Out

Vaultwarden stores its data in a SQLite database by default, so it can run as a single container with no external database required.

Step 1 - Start Vaultwarden

docker run -d --name vaultwarden \
  -p 8080:80 \
  -e ADMIN_TOKEN=Minimus! \
  -v vaultwarden-data:/data \
  reg.mini.dev/vaultwarden-server

Step 2 - Create an Account

Visit http://localhost:8080 and register a new account to open the web vault.

Step 3 - Open the Admin Panel

Visit http://localhost:8080/admin and log in with the ADMIN_TOKEN value set in Step 1 to view server diagnostics, manage users, and configure settings.

Step 4 - Clean Up

Stop and remove the container and its data volume:

docker rm -f vaultwarden
docker volume rm vaultwarden-data

Technical Considerations

The Vaultwarden-Server image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Vaultwarden-Server built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
