Solr Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Solr image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Use this image to set up a scalable, multi-modal search platform. Solr is built on Apache Lucene and supports full-text, vector, analytics, and geospatial search.

Try It Out

To take the image for a test, run the Minimus Solr image in daemon mode:

docker run -d --rm \
-p 8983:8983 \
reg.mini.dev/solr

Visit the Solr dashboard at http://localhost:8983. If you're working in a VM, run curl ifconfig.me to look up your external IP and substitute it like this: http://{IP}:8983.

Alternatively, you can check the service system information to print out the system settings:

curl -s http://localhost:8983/solr/admin/info/system

Technical Considerations

The Solr image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Solr built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default as user 1000. The public image runs as user 8983.
  2. Does not include unnecessary environmetal variables: SOLR_USER, SOLR_UID, SOLR_GROUP, and SOLR_GUID. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
