Semgrep Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Semgrep image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Semgrep is a fast, lightweight static analysis (SAST) tool that scans source code for security vulnerabilities, bugs, and anti-patterns across dozens of languages using rules that read like the code they match. It ships with semgrep scan for local and CI/CD scanning and semgrep ci for pipeline integration, and can connect to the Semgrep AppSec Platform for centralized findings management and Pro rules.

Try It Out

For a quick test, print the help menu:

docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/semgrep semgrep --help

Scan a local directory for vulnerabilities using Semgrep's default registry rules, mounting the current directory into the container:

docker run --rm -v "${PWD}:/src" reg.mini.dev/semgrep semgrep scan --config auto

Technical Considerations

The Semgrep image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Semgrep built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
