RStudio-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened RStudio image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


RStudio Server gives data teams a browser-based IDE for the R programming language, so analysts and data scientists can write scripts, explore data, and build visualizations from any machine without installing R or an IDE locally. It runs the same console, script editor, plotting, and package management tools as the desktop application, but centralizes compute and R environments on a server that multiple users can reach over the network. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.


FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.


Try It Out

Step 1 - Start RStudio Server

Run the container, setting a password for the default rstudio login:

docker run -d --rm --name rstudio \
  -p 8787:8787 \
  -e PASSWORD='MinimusSecure!!' \
  reg.mini.dev/rstudio-fips

Step 2 - Log In

Visit the RStudio IDE at http://localhost:8787. Log in:

  • Username: rstudio
  • Password: Minimus! (or whatever you set in Step 1)

You should see the RStudio IDE, with the console, environment, and file panes ready to use.


Technical Considerations

The RStudio-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image.

RStudio-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as a non-root user (rstudio) by default, matching the public image's non-root default of the same user.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
