Redpanda Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Redpanda image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Redpanda is a Kafka API-compatible streaming data platform for real-time event pipelines and messaging, built without ZooKeeper or the JVM for lower latency and simpler operations.

Try It Out

Start a Redpanda broker:

docker run -d --name redpanda \
-p 9092:9092 -p 9644:9644 \
reg.mini.dev/redpanda

Check the cluster status with rpk, Redpanda's built-in CLI:

docker exec -it redpanda rpk cluster info

Create a topic:

docker exec -it redpanda rpk topic create test-topic

Produce a message to the topic, then press Ctrl+D to send it:

docker exec -it redpanda rpk topic produce test-topic

Consume the message back:

docker exec -it redpanda rpk topic consume test-topic

Clean up

docker rm -f redpanda

Technical Considerations

The Redpanda image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Redpanda built by Minimus:

Listens on but does not expose the default ports: 8081/tcp, 8082/tcp, 9092/tcp and 9644/tcp. The public image listens on and exposes these ports by default.
Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
