PVC-Autoresizer FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened PVC-Autoresizer FIPS image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

PVC-Autoresizer is a Kubernetes controller that automatically expands PersistentVolumeClaims when available storage falls below a configured threshold. It queries volume metrics from Prometheus or the Kubernetes Metrics API, and when free space drops below the defined threshold, it increases the PVC's requested capacity—up to a configurable maximum—without manual intervention. It works with any CSI driver that supports the volume expansion capability and NodeGetVolumeStats API.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

PVC-Autoresizer runs as a controller inside your Kubernetes cluster and automatically expands PersistentVolumeClaims when free space falls below a configured threshold.

Prerequisites

  • A running Kubernetes cluster with a CSI driver that supports volume expansion and NodeGetVolumeStats
  • Helm v3.8 or higher (Installation instructions)
  • kubectl installed and configured
  • Prometheus deployed and collecting kubelet metrics or a metrics-server for Kubernetes Metrics API mode

Step 1 - Install via Helm

To install using Prometheus, point to your Prometheus endpoint:

helm repo add pvc-autoresizer https://topolvm.github.io/pvc-autoresizer/
helm install --create-namespace --namespace pvc-autoresizer pvc-autoresizer pvc-autoresizer/pvc-autoresizer \
  --set "controller.args.prometheusURL=<YOUR_PROMETHEUS_ENDPOINT>" \
  --set "image.repository=reg.mini.dev/pvc-autoresizer-fips" \
  --set "image.tag=latest"

To install using the Kubernetes Metrics API enable the flag:

helm repo add pvc-autoresizer https://topolvm.github.io/pvc-autoresizer/
helm install --create-namespace --namespace pvc-autoresizer pvc-autoresizer pvc-autoresizer/pvc-autoresizer \
  --set "controller.args.useK8sMetricsApi=true" \
  --set "image.repository=reg.mini.dev/pvc-autoresizer-fips" \
  --set "image.tag=latest"

Step 2 - Annotate a StorageClass

Add the resize.topolvm.io/enabled: "true" annotation to any StorageClass whose PVCs should be auto-resized. The StorageClass must also have allowVolumeExpansion: true.

kubectl annotate storageclass <YOUR_STORAGE_CLASS> resize.topolvm.io/enabled="true"

Step 3 - Annotate a PVC

Set the maximum size limit on any PVC you want auto-resized. PVC-Autoresizer will expand the volume up to this limit when free space falls below the threshold (default 10%).

kubectl annotate pvc <YOUR_PVC> resize.topolvm.io/storage_limit=100Gi

Technical Considerations

The PVC-Autoresizer FIPS image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

PVC-Autoresizer FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
