Portainer-CE-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Portainer CE image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Portainer CE gives teams a web-based interface for managing Docker, Docker Swarm, and Kubernetes environments — deploying containers and stacks, browsing images, volumes, and networks, and controlling access with role-based permissions — without requiring anyone to work directly from the command line. This lets teams standardize container operations across environments and give less experienced users safe, controlled access to production infrastructure. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

Run Portainer CE

Portainer needs access to the Docker socket to manage containers on the host, and a volume to persist its configuration and user accounts:

docker volume create portainer_data

docker run -d --name portainer \
  --restart=unless-stopped \
  -p 9443:9443 \
  -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock \
  -v portainer_data:/data \
  reg.mini.dev/portainer-ce-fips

Finish Setup

Visit https://localhost:9443 to access the Portainer UI, accept the self-signed certificate warning, and create an administrator account to finish setup. Once logged in, Portainer connects to the local Docker environment automatically, letting you browse containers, images, volumes, and networks, and deploy new stacks from the UI.

Clean Up

Stop and remove the container and volume:

docker rm -f portainer
docker volume rm portainer_data

Technical Considerations

The Portainer-CE-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image.

Portainer-CE-FIPS built by Minimus:

Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
