Pixi Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Pixi image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


Pixi is a fast, cross-platform package manager and workflow tool for managing dependencies, environments, and tasks for Python, Rust, C++, and other languages, all built on the conda ecosystem.


Try It Out

For a quick test, print the version information:

  docker run --rm -it \
  reg.mini.dev/pixi pixi --version

You should see the printout with the Pixi version. For example:

pixi 0.73.0

Search for a package

Pixi resolves dependencies from conda-forge by default. Search for a package with:

docker run --rm -it \
reg.mini.dev/pixi pixi search numpy

This returns the matching package versions available from the configured channel.

Initialize a project and add a dependency

Mount a local directory to persist the project files, then initialize a new workspace:

docker run --rm -it \
  -v $(pwd):/workdir \
  -w /workdir \
  reg.mini.dev/pixi pixi init myproject

Add a dependency to the new workspace, which updates the manifest and lock file for a reproducible environment:

docker run --rm -it \
  -v $(pwd)/myproject:/workdir \
  -w /workdir \
  reg.mini.dev/pixi pixi add numpy

Technical Considerations

The Pixi image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Pixi built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
