phpMyAdmin Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened phpMyAdmin image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

phpMyAdmin is a web-based tool for managing MySQL and MariaDB databases through a browser. It provides a graphical interface to browse and edit data, run SQL queries, manage users and permissions, and import or export databases, without requiring direct command-line access to the database server.

Try It Out

phpMyAdmin needs a database server to connect to. The steps below start a MySQL database and phpMyAdmin using Minimus images.

Step 1 - Create a Docker Network

Create a shared network so phpMyAdmin can reach the database by container name:

docker network create phpmyadmin-net

Step 2 - Start a MySQL Database

Start a MySQL database using the Minimus MySQL image. The following command sets the root password to Minimus!, but you can set any password you want:

docker run -d --name mysql \
  --net phpmyadmin-net \
  -e MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD=Minimus! \
  reg.mini.dev/mysql

Step 3 - Start phpMyAdmin

Run phpMyAdmin on the same network as the database, pointing it at the database container by name:

docker run --rm -d --name phpmyadmin \
  --net phpmyadmin-net \
  -p 8080:80 \
  -e PMA_HOST=mysql \
  reg.mini.dev/phpmyadmin

Once both containers are running, visit http://localhost:8080 in your browser and log in as follows:

Username: root
Password: Minimus! (or whatever you set in Step 2)

You should see the database selection screen, listing the databases on the server along with links to run SQL commands, and manage tables, users, and server status.

Step 4 - Clean Up

Stop and remove the containers and network:

docker rm -f phpmyadmin mysql
docker network rm phpmyadmin-net

Technical Considerations

The phpMyAdmin image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

phpMyAdmin built by Minimus:

Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
