Nova-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Nova image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Nova is an open-source CLI tool from Fairwinds that scans a Kubernetes cluster to find outdated or deprecated Helm chart releases. It compares each installed release against the latest chart available in its source repository and flags releases that are behind or no longer maintained. Nova can also check the container images running in the cluster against their upstream registries to surface newer major, minor, and patch versions. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

For a quick test, print the help menu:

docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/nova-fips /nova --help

Prerequisites

  • A running Kubernetes cluster with Helm releases installed
  • A kubeconfig file with access to that cluster

Scan for outdated Helm releases

Mount your kubeconfig, set the KUBECONFIG environment variable, and run as your own user ID so Nova can read it:

docker run --rm \
  --user $(id -u):$(id -g) \
  -e KUBECONFIG=/tmp/.kube/config \
  -v $HOME/.kube/config:/tmp/.kube/config:ro \
  reg.mini.dev/nova-fips /nova find

Include container image versions

Add the --containers flag to also check the container images running in the cluster for newer versions:

docker run --rm \
  -e KUBECONFIG=/home/nonroot/.kube/config \
  -v $HOME/.kube/config:/home/nonroot/.kube/config:ro \
  reg.mini.dev/nova-fips /nova find --containers

Technical Considerations

The Nova-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Quay.io. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Nova-FIPS built by Minimus:

Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
