Nexus3-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Nexus3 image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Nexus3 gives teams a single, self-hosted place to store, proxy, and distribute build artifacts and packages — Maven, npm, Docker images, PyPI, NuGet, Go modules, Helm charts, and more — instead of pulling every dependency straight from public registries. Proxying upstream repositories through one server lets CI/CD pipelines and developers reuse cached packages, publish internal releases, and apply consistent access control from a single source of truth. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

Take the Minimus Nexus3-FIPS image for a test run:

docker run -d --name my-minimus-nexus3 \
  -p 8081:8081 \
  reg.mini.dev/nexus3-fips

Nexus can take a couple of minutes to finish starting up. Poll the status endpoint until it returns a successful response:

curl -i http://localhost:8081/service/rest/v1/status

Ready to persist your data?

By default, a fresh container starts with no prior state. Mount a volume to /nexus-data to keep your repositories, blobs, and configuration across restarts:

docker run -d --name my-minimus-nexus3 \
  -p 8081:8081 \
  -v nexus3-data:/nexus-data \
  reg.mini.dev/nexus3-fips

Ready to log in?

Retrieve the auto-generated initial admin password from the running container:

docker exec my-minimus-nexus3 cat /nexus-data/admin.password

Visit http://localhost:8081 in your browser and sign in as admin using the password from the previous command. On first login, Nexus walks you through a setup wizard to set a new password and configure anonymous access.

Ready to interact with your repositories?

Once logged in, list the default repositories over the REST API using the password you set in the wizard:

curl -u admin:<your-new-password> http://localhost:8081/service/rest/v1/repositories

Nexus returns the built-in proxy, hosted, and group repositories as JSON:

[
  {
    "name": "maven-central",
    "format": "maven2",
    "type": "proxy",
    "url": "http://localhost:8081/repository/maven-central"
  },
  ...
]

Technical Considerations

The Nexus3-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image.

Nexus3-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default. The public image already runs as non-root under the nexus user (UID 200, GID 200).
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
