New Relic Prometheus Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened New Relic Prometheus image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Use the New Relic Prometheus OpenMetrics integration to scrape Prometheus-format metrics from endpoints inside or outside Kubernetes and forward them to the New Relic platform for storage and visualization.

Try It Out

Take the Minimus New Relic Prometheus image for a test run. First, create a configuration file config.yaml, and save the following to the file, replacing the placeholders with the relevant values:

Next, run the container, mounting the config file and passing your New Relic license key as an environment variable:

docker run -d --name newrelic-prometheus \
  -e LICENSE_KEY="{YOUR_NEW_RELIC_LICENSE_KEY}" \
  -v ./config.yaml:/config.yaml \
reg.mini.dev/newrelic-prometheus

Log into your New Relic account and run the following NRQL query to confirm data is being reported:

FROM Metric SELECT count(*) WHERE clusterName = 'my_cluster' SINCE 1 hour ago

Technical Considerations

The New Relic Prometheus image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

New Relic Prometheus built by Minimus:

Runs as non-root by default.
Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
