Mongo-Hardened-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a Mongo-Hardened-FIPS image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

MongoDB is a document-oriented NoSQL database used to store and manage data in flexible, JSON-like structures for scalable applications. Deploy Mongo with TLS enabled using our guide.

About Minimus Hardened Images

Minimus Hardened images provide secure by default configurations that comply with CIS Benchmarks. The CIS Benchmark for MongoDB is a consensus-based security hardening guide that is aligned with industry standards and defines recommended configuration settings, access controls, and operational practices to reduce the attack surface. Review the compliance report to see the special audit report.

Notes:

  • The image’s default configuration file enforces many CIS Mongo hardening controls. Exercise caution when overriding this file, as custom configurations may inadvertently weaken or negate CIS compliance.
  • Full CIS benchmark compliance requires additional post-deployment runtime validations that are out of scope for Minimus.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

Take the Minimus Mongo image for a test run. The following command will set the root password to Minimus! but you can set any password you want:

docker run --rm -d \
  --hostname mongod.local \
  -v {CERTS_DIR}:/ssl \
  --network {NETWORK} \
  -e MONGO_INITDB_ROOT_USERNAME=mongoadmin \
  -e MONGO_INITDB_ROOT_PASSWORD=Minimus! \
  reg.mini.dev/mongo-hardened-fips mongod \
    --dbpath /data/db \
    --bind_ip_all \
    --tlsMode=requireTLS \
    --tlsCAFile /ssl/ca.pem \
    --tlsCertificateKeyFile /ssl/fullchain.pem

When running operations that need authorization, you will need to pass the user, password, unique port, and authenticationDatabase like so:

docker run --rm \
  -v "{CERTS_DIR}":/ssl \
  -v ./mongosh:{MONGO_DIR} \
  --network {NETWORK} \
  reg.mini.dev/mongo-hardened-fips mongo \
    -u mongoadmin \
    -p "Minimus!" \
    --authenticationDatabase admin \
    --port 27018 \
    --tls \
    --tlsCAFile /ssl/ca.pem \
    --tlsCertificateKeyFile /ssl/fullchain.pem \
    --host mongod.local \
    --eval "load(\"{MONGO_DIR}/script.js\")"

Technical Considerations

The Mongo-Hardened-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Mongo-Hardened-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root as user 999 to align with the public image.
  2. Uses a config file with hardened settings that change the port to 27018 instead of 27017, enable authorization, disable JavaScript (JS), and disable enableLocalhostAuthBypass.
  3. The config file sets the system logs to be not quiet and to append new entries.
  4. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
