Kube-Metrics-Adapter Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Kube-Metrics-Adapter image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


Kube Metrics Adapter is used to configure a Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA) to scale deployments up or down based on real-world application load (like queue length or request latency) rather than just hardware resource utilization. The adapter queries external metric sources and exposes them to Kubernetes' native autoscaling mechanism.

Deploying to a Cluster

Kube Metrics Adapter can source metrics from Prometheus, Skipper ingress traffic, AWS (e.g. SQS queue length), scheduled scaling windows, and other collectors. It is meant to run as a Deployment inside the cluster, using its service account to query the Kubernetes API. The example below, based on the project's example Deployment manifest, configures it against Prometheus, the most broadly applicable source, alongside Skipper ingress metrics:

  --skipper-ingress-metrics

This requires:

  • A running Kubernetes cluster with the custom/external metrics APIs registered (example manifests)
  • A Prometheus server reachable from the cluster

Technical Considerations

The Kube-Metrics-Adapter image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Kube-Metrics-Adapter built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
