Kibana-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened FIPS-validated Kibana image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


Use this Kibana-FIPS image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.


FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.


Try It Out

You can run Kibana with a single-node Elasticsearch cluster for testing.

Step 1 - Create a Docker Bridge Network

First, create a new Docker network:

docker network create elasticsearch

Step 2 - Run an Elasticsearch Server

For this test, start an Elasticsearch server in a single-node mode requiring limited memory:

docker run --rm --name minimus-es \
  --net elasticsearch \
  -p 9200:9200 \
  -e "xpack.security.enabled=true" \
  -e "discovery.type=single-node" \
  -e "ES_JAVA_OPTS=-Xms512m -Xmx512m" \
  reg.mini.dev/elasticsearch

Regenerate the Elasticsearch password for use in the final login step:

docker exec -it minimus-es /usr/share/elasticsearch/bin/elasticsearch-reset-password -u elastic

Regenerate the Kibana enrollment token for use in the next step:

docker exec -it minimus-es /usr/share/elasticsearch/bin/elasticsearch-create-enrollment-token -s kibana

Step 3 - Run Kibana

Start a Kibana container and connect it to the Elasticsearch server using the Kibana enrollment token:

docker run --rm \
  --net elasticsearch \
  -e ELASTICSEARCH_HOSTS=https://minimus-es:9200 \
  -e KIBANA_ENROLLMENT_TOKEN={enrollment-token} \
  -p 5601:5601 \
  reg.mini.dev/kibana

Note that since Kibana and Elasticsearch are in separate containers, you'll need to use the Elasticsearch container name as a DNS name (minimus-es in our example).

Step 4 - Log into the Kibana Web Interface

Visit http://localhost:5601 to view the login page. Log in using the username elastic and the password generated in step 2. You should see the Kibana dashboard.


Technical Considerations

The Kibana-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Kibana-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks. The public image runs as root.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
