Keycloak Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Keycloak image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Keycloak is an identity and access management (IAM) service used to provide centralized login, Single Sign-On (SSO), OpenID Connect (OIDC) support, and issues JWTs for backend access control. Learn how to set up SSO with Keycloak

Try It Out

Take the Minimus Keycloak image for a test run. The following command will set the root password to Minimus! but you can set any password you want:

docker run --rm -p 8080:8080 \
-e KC_BOOTSTRAP_ADMIN_USERNAME=admin \
-e KC_BOOTSTRAP_ADMIN_PASSWORD=Minimus! \
reg.mini.dev/keycloak start-dev

The container will start up and print messages beginning with Updating the configuration and installing your custom providers, if any. and Running the server in development mode. DO NOT use this configuration in production.

Wait for the image to initialize.

Visit the admin console at http://localhost:8080/admin/master/console/ to manage your new Keycloak server.

You can also visit the Account Console at http://localhost:8080/realms/master/account. It is the self-service portal for individual users.

Technical Considerations

The Keycloak image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Keycloak built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default as user 1000. By comparison, the public image runs with group ID 0 (root group).
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
