K8sGPT-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened K8sGPT image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

K8sGPT is an AI-powered Kubernetes diagnostic tool that scans clusters to detect, triage, and explain issues in plain English. It runs built-in analyzers against core resources such as pods, deployments, services, and events, then optionally enriches the findings with natural-language explanations from a configurable AI backend like OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Amazon Bedrock, Google Gemini, or a local model. K8sGPT also supports custom analyzers, remote result caching, and a serve mode with REST, gRPC, and MCP interfaces for integrating with AI assistants. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

For a quick test, print the help menu:

docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/k8sgpt-fips --help

Analyze a Kubernetes cluster

If you have a running Kubernetes cluster with an accessible kubeconfig, you can mount your kubeconfig to scan a live cluster using the built-in analyzers:

docker run --rm \
  -e KUBECONFIG=/home/nonroot/.kube/config \
  -v $HOME/.kube/config:/home/nonroot/.kube/config:ro \
  reg.mini.dev/k8sgpt-fips analyze

Get AI-powered explanations

If you have an API key for a supported AI backend (such as OpenAI) you can enable AI-generated explanations.

Configure an AI backend:

docker run --rm \
  -v $HOME/.k8sgpt:/home/nonroot/.k8sgpt \
reg.mini.dev/k8sgpt-fips auth add --backend openai --model gpt-4o-mini --password <your-openai-api-key>

Run the analysis with --explain to enrich each finding with a natural-language explanation. You can mount a local directory so the backend configuration persists between runs

docker run --rm \
  -e KUBECONFIG=/home/nonroot/.kube/config \
  -v $HOME/.kube/config:/home/nonroot/.kube/config:ro \
  -v $HOME/.k8sgpt:/home/nonroot/.k8sgpt \
  reg.mini.dev/k8sgpt-fips analyze --explain

Technical Considerations

The K8sGPT-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

K8sGPT-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default as user 65532, matching the public image.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
