K8s-Sidecar-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened, FIPS-validated K8s-Sidecar image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Use this K8s-Sidecar-FIPS image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

Take the Minimus K8s-Sidecar-FIPS image for a test run:

docker run --rm \
reg.mini.dev/k8s-sidecar-fips

The container should print output such as:

{"time": "2025-06-25T10:46:44.083961+00:00", "level": "INFO", "msg": "Starting collector"}
{"time": "2025-06-25T10:46:44.084399+00:00", "level": "INFO", "msg": "No folder annotation was provided, defaulting to k8s-sidecar-target-directory"}
{"time": "2025-06-25T10:46:44.084612+00:00", "level": "CRITICAL", "msg": "Should have added {LABEL} as environment variable! Exit"}

Technical Considerations

The K8s-Sidecar image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

K8s-Sidecar-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. The image contains the k8s-sidecar python app. The default entrypoint just runs the k8s-sidecar app without any flags.
  2. Runs as non-root by default as user 65534, to match the default user in the public image.
  3. The working directory is under /usr/share/app. The public image working directory is /app.
  4. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
