Jaeger-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Jaeger image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Jaeger is a distributed tracing platform used to monitor and troubleshoot transactions in complex, microservices-based distributed systems, including root cause analysis, service dependency analysis, and performance and latency optimization. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

Take the Minimus Jaeger image for a test run:

docker run -d \
  --name=jaeger \
  -p 16686:16686 \
  -p 4317:4317 \
  -p 4318:4318 \
  reg.mini.dev/jaeger-fips

This command starts the Jaeger all-in-one binary, which runs the collector, query service, and UI in a single container using in-memory storage. It exposes the UI over port 16686 and the OTLP gRPC and HTTP receivers over ports 4317 and 4318.

Visit the Jaeger UI at http://localhost:16686 in your browser. If you're working in a VM, run curl ifconfig.me to look up your external IP and substitute it like this: http://{IP}:16686.

Technical Considerations

The Jaeger-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Jaeger-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
