Hydra-FIPS Overview
Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Hydra image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
Hydra is an OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect provider built by Ory that issues and manages access, refresh, and ID tokens to secure APIs and applications. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.
FIPS 140-3 Certification
This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.
To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.
Try It Out
For a quick test, print the version information:
docker run --rm \
reg.mini.dev/hydra-fips versionYou should see the version, git hash and build time:
Version: v26.2.0
Git Hash: 0b84568fffccf151dc5e6c7955fdfb738555bf4b
Build Time: 2026-07-15T09:55:12ZReady to run the OAuth 2.0 server?
You can test Hydra with an ephemeral in-memory database, so no external Postgres or MySQL instance is required:
docker run --rm -d \
-p 4444:4444 \
-p 4445:4445 \
-e DSN=memory \
-e SECRETS_SYSTEM=youReallyNeedToChangeThis \
-e URLS_SELF_ISSUER=http://localhost:4444/ \
-e URLS_LOGIN=http://localhost:9020/login \
-e URLS_CONSENT=http://localhost:9020/consent \
reg.mini.dev/hydra-fips serve all --devConfirm the public API is ready:
curl http://localhost:4444/health/readyYou should see the confirmation {"status":"ok"}.
- Port 4444 serves the public OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect endpoints.
- Port 4445 serves the admin API used to manage clients and tokens.
DSN=memorystores all data in memory and resets when the container stops. Use a real Postgres or MySQL DSN for anything beyond a quick test.SECRETS_SYSTEMmust be at least 16 characters. For anything beyond a quick test, generate a random 32+ character value instead of reusing the placeholder above.
Technical Considerations
The Hydra-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image.
Hydra-FIPS built by Minimus:
- Runs as non-root by default as user 65532. The public image also runs as non-root, as user 65532.
- Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
