Headlamp Plugin for Flux Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Headlamp Plugin for Flux image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

The Headlamp Plugin for Flux extends the Headlamp Kubernetes UI with GitOps visibility, enabling teams to browse, inspect, and manage Flux resources directly from the Headlamp dashboard.

Try It Out

Prerequisites: A running Kubernetes cluster with Helm and kubectl configured, and Flux installed in the cluster.

Add the Headlamp Helm repository:

helm repo add headlamp https://kubernetes-sigs.github.io/headlamp/
helm repo update

Create a values.yaml to configure Headlamp with the Flux plugin as an init container. The Headlamp chart manages its own volumes internally, so an init container's volumeMounts entry must reference a volume declared elsewhere in the pod spec — the chart's built-in initContainers and volumes values let you declare that shared volume and mount it in both the init container and the main Headlamp container:

initContainers:
  - name: headlamp-plugin-flux
    image: reg.mini.dev/headlamp-plugin-flux
    command: ["/bin/sh", "-c"]
    args:
      - cp -r /plugins/* /target-plugins/
    volumeMounts:
      - name: headlamp-plugins
        mountPath: /target-plugins

volumes:
  - name: headlamp-plugins
    emptyDir: {}

volumeMounts:
  - name: headlamp-plugins
    mountPath: /headlamp/plugins

Deploy Headlamp with the plugin:

helm install my-headlamp headlamp/headlamp \
  --values values.yaml \
  --namespace kube-system

Forward the service to your local machine:

kubectl port-forward -n kube-system svc/my-headlamp 8080:80

Technical Considerations

The Headlamp Plugin for Flux image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Headlamp Plugin for Flux built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
