Grafana-Logcli-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Grafana-Logcli image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Grafana Logcli is the command-line client for querying and tailing logs stored in Grafana Loki. It lets you run LogQL queries, list available labels, and tail live log streams directly from the terminal, making it a lightweight way to explore and troubleshoot logs without the Grafana UI. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

For a quick test, print the help menu:

docker run --rm \
reg.mini.dev/grafana-logcli-fips \
--help

Deploy Loki

Logcli needs a running Loki instance to query. Create a shared Docker network so the two containers can reach each other by name:

docker network create loki-net

Start Loki on the shared network:

docker run -d --rm \
    --name minimus-loki \
    --network loki-net \
    -p 3100:3100 \
    reg.mini.dev/loki-fips

Check that Loki is ready:

curl -s localhost:3100/ready

You should see the message ready. If you don't, wait another minute for the service to initialize and repeat the command.

Query Logs

Point logcli at the running Loki instance over the shared network and list its available labels:

docker run --rm \
--network loki-net \
-e LOKI_ADDR=http://minimus-loki:3100 \
reg.mini.dev/grafana-logcli-fips \
labels

Or run a LogQL query against the same instance:

docker run --rm \
--network loki-net \
-e LOKI_ADDR=http://minimus-loki:3100 \
reg.mini.dev/grafana-logcli-fips \
query '{job="varlogs"}'

Clean Up

Stop the Loki container and remove the network:

docker stop minimus-loki
docker network rm loki-net

Technical Considerations

The Grafana-Logcli-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Grafana-Logcli-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
