Google-Cloud-CLI Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Google Cloud CLI image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Use Google Cloud CLI when you need a unified command line tool to manage your Google Cloud services, including Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, and Google Kubernetes Engine.

Try It Out

For a quick test, print the version information:

docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/google-cloud-cli gcloud version

For another test, you can run the following with your environment credentials to list your Google Cloud projects. Mounting your local gcloud configuration into the container's /root/.config volume keeps your active configuration and credentials outside the container:

docker run --rm \
  -v ~/.config/gcloud:/root/.config/gcloud \
  reg.mini.dev/google-cloud-cli gcloud projects list

Authenticate with a service account

To authenticate non-interactively, mount a service account key file and activate it:

docker run --rm \
  -v $(pwd)/key.json:/tmp/key.json:ro \
  -v ~/.config/gcloud:/root/.config/gcloud \
  reg.mini.dev/google-cloud-cli gcloud auth activate-service-account --key-file=/tmp/key.json

This is useful in CI/CD pipelines.

Technical Considerations

The Google-Cloud-CLI image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Google-Cloud-CLI built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
  2. Ships the full set of Google Cloud CLI binaries (gcloud, gsutil, bq) with no fixed entrypoint, so the desired binary must be passed as the first argument, as shown above.
  3. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
