GDAL Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened GDAL image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

GDAL (Geospatial Data Abstraction Library) is a translator library for raster and vector geospatial data formats. It exposes a unified data model across 150+ raster formats (GeoTIFF, JPEG2000, NetCDF, HDF5, COG, Zarr) and 100+ vector formats (Shapefile, GeoJSON, PostGIS, KML), along with a suite of command-line utilities for format conversion, reprojection, and spatial data processing.

Try It Out

For a quick test, print the version information:

docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/gdal gdalinfo --version

It will output the version release date and official release codename, for example:

GDAL 3.13.1 "Iowa City", released 2026/06/01

Technical Considerations

The GDAL image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

GDAL built by Minimus:

Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
