Fluent-Operator-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Fluent-Operator-FIPS image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Fluent Operator manages the full lifecycle of Fluent Bit and Fluentd deployments in Kubernetes. It provides CRD-based configuration for log collection, filtering, and forwarding pipelines, enabling declarative observability infrastructure without manually managing DaemonSets or configuration files. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

Prerequisites

  • A running Kubernetes cluster (v1.21 or higher is recommended)
  • Helm v3 (Installation instructions)
  • kubectl installed and configured

Step 1: Start Cluster

If you have a cluster to work with, skip this step. Otherwise, start a Minikube cluster. Deployment instructions

Step 2: Deploy via Helm Chart

Add the Helm repo and deploy:

helm repo add fluent https://fluent.github.io/helm-charts
helm install fluent-operator \
    --create-namespace \
    -n fluent fluent/fluent-operator \
    --set operator.container.repository=reg.mini.dev/fluent-operator-fips \
    --set operator.container.tag=latest

Wait a moment and check that the Pod is up and running:

kubectl -n fluent get pods

Confirm that a Minimus image was deployed:

kubectl -n fluent describe pods | grep Image:

Step 3: Clean Up

Uninstall the chart to delete the namespace and its resources, including Pods, Deployments, Services, and Secrets:

helm uninstall fluent-operator -n fluent

Technical Considerations

The Fluent-Operator-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Fluent-Operator-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as a non-root user by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
