Elixir Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Elixir image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Elixir is a dynamic, functional language for building applications that need to stay responsive under heavy concurrent load, such as real-time features, chat systems, IoT device coordination, or web apps built with the Phoenix framework. It runs on the Erlang VM (BEAM), which lets individual processes fail and restart in isolation instead of taking down the whole application, and this image includes the full toolchain — mix, iex, and Erlang/OTP — needed to build, test, and run Elixir projects.

Try It Out

For a quick test, print the version information:

docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/elixir elixir --version

To take the Minimus Elixir image for a test run, save the following script to a file named hello.exs:

IO.puts("Hello, Minimus!")

Run the container with your current user to avoid permission issues:

docker run --rm \
-v "$(pwd)":/work -w /work \
--user $(id -u):$(id -g) \
reg.mini.dev/elixir elixir hello.exs

You should get the response:

Hello, Minimus!

Ready to work on your own Elixir project?

You can mount your source code and use Mix, Elixir's build tool, directly inside the container. Create and run a new Mix project:

docker run -it --rm \
-v "$(pwd)":/work -w /work \
reg.mini.dev/elixir \
sh -c "mix new hello_mix && cd hello_mix && mix run -e 'IO.puts(\"Hello from Mix!\")'"

Technical Considerations

The Elixir image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Elixir built by Minimus:

Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
