Dive-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Dive image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


Dive is a CLI tool that explores a Docker/OCI image layer by layer, calculating an efficiency score and estimating wasted space to help shrink image size and catch bloated builds in CI pipelines. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.


FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.


Try It Out

Dive reads images from your local Docker engine, so pull an image to analyze first, for example, the Minimus nginx-FIPS image:

docker pull reg.mini.dev/nginx-fips:latest

Mount the Docker socket so Dive can access it, then analyze the image:

docker run --rm -it \
  -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock \
  reg.mini.dev/dive-fips reg.mini.dev/nginx-fips:latest

The interactive viewer will open in the terminal, for example:

Enforce an efficiency threshold

To enforce Dive's default efficiency thresholds in a CI pipeline, set the CI environment variable:

docker run --rm -e CI=true \
  -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock \
  reg.mini.dev/dive-fips reg.mini.dev/nginx-fips:latest

To modify the thresholds, add the --lowestEfficiency, --highestWastedBytes, and --highestUserWastedPercent flags, for example:

docker run --rm -e CI=true \
  -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock \
  reg.mini.dev/dive-fips reg.mini.dev/nginx-fips:latest \
  --lowestEfficiency 0.95 --highestWastedBytes 10MB --highestUserWastedPercent 0.05

Save the layer analysis to a file

To save the layer analysis to a file instead of opening the interactive viewer, create a local directory to hold the results:

mkdir -p "$(pwd)/dive_results"

Mount that directory into the container and use the --json flag:

docker run --rm \
  -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock \
  -v "$(pwd)/dive_results:/output" \
  reg.mini.dev/dive-fips reg.mini.dev/nginx-fips:latest --json /output/dive-report.json

The report is written directly to your host machine at dive_results/dive-report.json.


Technical Considerations

The Dive-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image.

Dive-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
