Data Prepper Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Data Prepper image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

OpenSearch Data Prepper is a server-side data collector capable of filtering, enriching, transforming, normalizing, and aggregating data for downstream analysis and visualization. Data Prepper is the preferred data ingestion tool for OpenSearch. It's the pipeline component behind OpenSearch's trace analytics and log analytics features, used to visualize request flows, spot performance issues, and get deeper insight into application behavior.

Try It Out

Create a pipelines.yaml file describing the pipeline to run — this example uses a random data source and prints to standard output:

Create a data-prepper-config.yaml file with the server settings:

ssl: false

Run the Data Prepper container and mount the files you just created:

docker run --rm \

  -v ./pipelines.yaml:/usr/share/data-prepper/pipelines/pipelines.yaml \
  -v ./data-prepper-config.yaml:/usr/share/data-prepper/config/data-prepper-config.yaml \

The pipeline starts printing randomly generated events to the container logs:

Technical Considerations

The Data Prepper image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
