CouchDB Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened CouchDB image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Use CouchDB when you need a NoSQL database to manage JSON documents over a RESTful HTTP API. CouchDB supports declarative indexing with JavaScript and is especially useful for mobile apps or distributed systems and other applications that need offline-first data, replication across devices or servers, and flexible document structures.

Try It Out

Start the Minimus CouchDB image for a test run. To persist the data, navigate to the relevant directory where you want to mount the volume.

-v couchdbdata:/opt/couchdb/data \
reg.mini.dev/couchdb

This example set the root password to Minimus but you can choose any password you like. Note that if your password contains special characters, you will need to escape them or wrap the URL in single quotes when you send an HTTP request.

Check that the server is up:

curl http://localhost:5984/

The server will return its status, for example:

Ready to add a database?

If you inspect the logs, you will notice the warning Missing system database _users. Send an HTTP GET request to create a new users database. Authenticate using the credentials set in the run command:

curl -X PUT http://admin:Minimus@localhost:5984/_users

List all databases in the container to confirm that the new database was created:

docker exec -it minimus-couchdb curl -u admin:Minimus http://127.0.0.1:5984/_all_dbs

The terminal should print ["_users"] in response.

Technical Considerations

The CouchDB image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

CouchDB built by Minimus:

Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks. The public image runs as root.
Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
