consul
Consul Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened Consul image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
Consul is a service networking platform for securing service communications and automating network service management. It solves networking and security challenges when operating microservices and cloud infrastructure in multi-cloud and hybrid cloud environments at any scale.
Try It Out
Run Consul in dev mode:
docker run -d --name=minimus-consul-dev -p 8500:8500 reg.mini.dev/consul agent -dev -client=0.0.0.0Check the cluster members:
docker exec minimus-consul-dev consul membersExample output:
Node Address Status Type Build Protocol DC Partition Segment
368190166ed7 127.0.0.1:8301 alive server 2.0.2 2 dc1 default <all>Query the HTTP API for the current leader:
curl http://127.0.0.1:8500/v1/status/leaderYou should receive "127.0.0.1:8300".
Technical Considerations
The Consul image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
Consul built by Minimus:
- Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
- Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
