Composer-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened FIPS-validated Composer image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Use this Composer-FIPS image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

Before we can take the Minimus Composer image for a test run, we'll need a PHP project with a composer.json file. If you have a PHP project ready on hand, you can skip the next step.

Otherwise, in your project directory, create a composer.json file with the sample code below:

{
  "name": "test/package",
  "description": "A test package",
  "require": {
    "monolog/monolog": "3.9.*"
  }
}

When initiated, this configuration file will download and install Monolog version 3.9.x, a popular PHP logging library, and generate a composer.lock file to lock in the version.

Next, run the container and mount your current project directory:

docker run --rm -it \
-v "$PWD:/app" \
reg.mini.dev/composer-fips update

If you run into filesystem permission issues, run the container with your current user (or another user, as relevant):

docker run --rm \
-v "$(pwd):/app" \
--user $(id -u):$(id -g) \
reg.mini.dev/composer-fips update

You should see a summary of the updates, for example:

Updating dependencies
Lock file operations: 2 installs, 0 updates, 0 removals
  - Locking monolog/monolog (3.9.0)
  - Locking psr/log (3.0.2)
Writing lock file
...

Technical Considerations

The Composer-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Composer-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks. The public image runs as root.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
