Cloudprober-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Cloudprober image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Cloudprober is an active monitoring tool that runs continuous synthetic probes using HTTP, PING, TCP, DNS, gRPC, and UDP to detect failures. It auto-discovers targets in Kubernetes and GCP, and exports the resulting metrics to Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, AWS CloudWatch, and other monitoring backends. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

For a quick test, print the version information:

docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/cloudprober-fips --version

Run an HTTP Probe

Create a probe config file to check the Minimus site:

cat <<EOF > cloudprober.cfg
probe {
  name: "minimus_image_gallery"
  type: HTTP
  targets {
    host_names: "images.minimus.io"
  }
  http_probe {
    protocol: HTTPS
  }
  interval: "5s"
  timeout: "1s"
}
EOF

Start Cloudprober with the config mounted, exposing the metrics port:

docker run -d --rm \
  -p 9313:9313 \
  -v $PWD/cloudprober.cfg:/etc/cloudprober.cfg \
  reg.mini.dev/cloudprober-fips

Query the Prometheus-format metrics for the probe:

curl "http://localhost:9313/metrics" | grep minimus_image_gallery

The response includes the probe's success and failure counters. Matching total and success counts, with failure at 0, confirm the probe is succeeding:

total{ptype="http",probe="minimus_image_gallery",dst="images.minimus.io"} 2
success{ptype="http",probe="minimus_image_gallery",dst="images.minimus.io"} 2
resp_code{ptype="http",probe="minimus_image_gallery",dst="images.minimus.io",code="200"} 2
failure{ptype="http",probe="minimus_image_gallery",dst="images.minimus.io"} 0

Technical Considerations

The Cloudprober-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image.

Cloudprober-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
