Cilium-DNSProxy Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Cilium-DNSProxy image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Cilium-DNSProxy runs Cilium's DNS-based network policy enforcement as its own standalone component instead of inside the Cilium agent, so domain-based egress rules (for example, allowing traffic only to api.example.com) keep being enforced even while the agent itself restarts or is temporarily unavailable. It communicates with the Cilium agent over gRPC to receive policy updates and report the DNS lookups it observes, giving platform teams more resilient DNS policy enforcement without changing how those policies are written.

Technical Considerations

The Cilium-DNSProxy image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Cilium-DNSProxy built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
  2. Deployed as a separate DaemonSet alongside the Cilium agent, typically enabled and configured through the Cilium Helm chart rather than run standalone.
  3. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
