Camunda-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Camunda image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


Camunda helps organizations automate and monitor multi-step business processes (e.g., order fulfillment, approval workflows, claims processing). By modeling workflows visually with the BPMN standard, a single engine coordinates the people, systems, and services involved. This image provides a unified, containerized deployment of the Camunda 8 orchestration cluster that bundles the process engine, operational monitoring, and human task management. It enables developers to easily spin up a scalable, cloud-native platform without complex manual configuration. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.


FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.


Try It Out

Camunda requires a secondary storage backend (Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or RDBMS) to run, and enables API authentication by default with no built-in user. For a quick local test, use Camunda's embedded H2 database and disable the authentication check — no external database or user setup needed:

Wait a minute for the server to initialize, then confirm the engine is ready by requesting the cluster topology:

Visit the Operate console at http://localhost:8080/operate to monitor running process instances, and the Tasklist console at http://localhost:8080/tasklist to complete human tasks in a workflow.

Note: the embedded H2 database and disabled authentication are intended for local testing only, not production use.


Technical Considerations

The Camunda-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Camunda-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. The Minimus -dev variant matches the public image's full package set. The production image drops dev-only packages, including apk-tools, git, and wget, along with their library closure (libcurl, krb5-libs/krb5-conf, libldap, cyrus-sasl, heimdal-libs, keyutils-libs, libcom_err, libnghttp2, libssl3, libpsl, libidn2, libunistring, libverto, sqlite-libs, readline, gdbm).
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
