Buildpack-Deps Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened Buildpack-Deps image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Buildpack-Deps provides the compilers, development headers, and source-control clients (git, mercurial, subversion) needed to build software from source, without tying that toolchain to a single language runtime. It's useful for building a monorepo that combines several language ecosystems, where a single-language base image isn't enough on its own.

Buildpack-Deps is used for production deployments as the build stage in a multi-stage Dockerfile, so compilers and development headers needed to build the application don't ship in the final container. Learn how it's done

Try It Out

To try the Minimus Buildpack-Deps image, we will compile and run a simple C program to confirm the build toolchain works.

In your project directory, save the following code to hello.c:

Compile and run it using the image:

You should see:

Hello from Buildpack-Deps!

This confirms the image includes a working C compiler and standard library headers.

Check included tools

Buildpack-Deps also bundles curl and source-control clients like git, useful when a build step needs to fetch dependencies directly instead of through a package manager. Check that both are present:

docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/buildpack-deps sh -c "git --version && curl --version"

Expect newer version numbers than the public buildpack-deps image reports since Minimus rebuilds images to include the latest available package versions rather than pinning to what upstream last published.

Technical Considerations

The Buildpack-Deps image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Buildpack-Deps built by Minimus:

Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
