Buildah-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Buildah image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


Buildah lets platform and CI teams build OCI and Docker-compatible container images without running a container daemon or requiring root privileges on the host — useful in CI pipelines, restricted environments, and other containers where running Docker itself isn't possible. It builds from a standard Dockerfile or by scripting each step of an image individually for finer control over the result, and Podman uses it internally to handle Dockerfile-based builds. Use this image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.


FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.


Try It Out

For a quick test, print the version information:

docker run --rm reg.mini.dev/buildah-fips buildah --version

Prerequisites

  • The host kernel must have the fuse module loaded (modprobe fuse) so Buildah can use fuse-overlayfs to manage container storage.

Build an Image

Save the following to a file named Containerfile in a new, empty directory:

FROM alpine
RUN echo "Hello from Buildah" > /hello.txt
CMD ["cat", "/hello.txt"]

Buildah needs access to the host's /dev/fuse device to manage its overlay storage, and a volume to persist that storage across separate docker run invocations. Create the volume, then build the image from the Containerfile:

docker volume create buildah-storage

docker run --rm --device /dev/fuse \
  -e BUILDAH_ISOLATION=chroot \
  -v "$(pwd):/build" \
  -v buildah-storage:/var/lib/containers \
  reg.mini.dev/buildah-fips \
  buildah bud -t hello-image /build

Verify the Image

List the images in that same storage volume to confirm the build succeeded:

docker run --rm --device /dev/fuse \
  -v buildah-storage:/var/lib/containers \
  reg.mini.dev/buildah-fips \
  buildah images

docker volume rm buildah-storage

Technical Considerations

The Buildah-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image.

Buildah-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as root to support required functions in alignment with the public image.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
