AWS X-Ray Daemon Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened AWS X-Ray Daemon image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


AWS X-Ray Daemon collects trace segment data from applications instrumented with an AWS X-Ray SDK and forwards it to the AWS X-Ray API, giving teams visibility into request latency and errors across distributed services without each application needing direct network access to X-Ray. It runs as a lightweight sidecar or standalone process alongside instrumented applications on EC2, ECS, or EKS, listening on UDP port 2000 for incoming segment data.

Technical Considerations

The AWS X-Ray Daemon image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

AWS X-Ray Daemon built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default, matching the public image's non-root default of user xray (uid 10001).
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
