aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s is a Kubernetes sidecar that works with CSI drivers to modify AWS EBS volumes by adding annotations to a PersistentVolumeClaim (PVC). Note that the project has been deprecated in favor of the native Kubernetes VolumeAttributesClass API (ref).

Ready to run with local kubeconfig?

Run the controller using a local kubeconfig file for cluster access:

docker run --rm -it \
  -v $(pwd)/kubeconfig:/workdir/kubeconfig \
  reg.mini.dev/aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s \
  --kubeconfig /workdir/kubeconfig

Run with a Prometheus metrics endpoint

To enable a Prometheus metrics endpoint (assuming it is on port 8080):

docker run --rm -it \
  reg.mini.dev/aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s \
  --http-endpoint :8080 \
  --metrics-path /metrics

This exposes metrics and health checks on :8080/metrics for monitoring.

Tune for large clusters

You can optimize Kubernetes API throughput for environments with high load, for example:

docker run --rm -it \
  reg.mini.dev/aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s \
  --kube-api-qps 20 \
  --kube-api-burst 40

To adjust retry intervals for failed modifications:

docker run --rm -it \
  reg.mini.dev/aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s \
  --retry-interval-start 5s \
  --retry-interval-max 10m

This configures the exponential backoff for retrying failed volume modifications.

You can also increase concurrency for processing requests. For example, run the container with 20 workers to handle multiple modification requests in parallel:

docker run --rm -it \
  reg.mini.dev/aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s \
  --workers 20

Set a custom CSI driver socket

For example, you can set a non-default CSI driver socket path:

docker run --rm -it \
  reg.mini.dev/aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s \
  --csi-address /run/csi/custom.sock

Technical Considerations

The aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

aws-volume-modifier-for-k8s built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks. The public image runs as root.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
