Argo CLI FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Argo CLI image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.

Argo Workflows is a workflow engine for orchestrating parallel jobs on Kubernetes that can be used to run CI/CD pipelines natively on Kubernetes. Argo CLI is a command-line tool for interacting with Argo Workflows from your terminal.

FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.

Try It Out

To take the Minimus Argo CLI FIPS image for a test run, look up the version information:

docker run --rm \
reg.mini.dev/argo-cli-fips version

Ready to manage workflows?

To submit a workflow, first replace the hello-world.yaml with your workflow YAML file and run:

docker run --rm -it \
-v $(pwd):/workdir \
-e KUBECONFIG=/workdir/kubeconfig \
reg.mini.dev/argo-cli-fips submit /workdir/hello-world.yaml

This command submits the YAML workflow to the cluster defined in kubeconfig.

To list all workflows in the current namespace:

docker run --rm -it \
-v $(pwd):/workdir \
-e KUBECONFIG=/workdir/kubeconfig \
reg.mini.dev/argo-cli-fips list

To get details by a workflow name (for example, my-workflow):

docker run --rm -it \
-v $(pwd):/workdir \
-e KUBECONFIG=/workdir/kubeconfig \
reg.mini.dev/argo-cli-fips get my-workflow

To watch workflow progress and stream live updates of the workflow until it completes:

docker run --rm -it \
-v $(pwd):/workdir \
-e KUBECONFIG=/workdir/kubeconfig \
reg.mini.dev/argo-cli-fips watch my-workflow

To delete a workflow by name (for example, my-workflow):

docker run --rm -it \
-v $(pwd):/workdir \
-e KUBECONFIG=/workdir/kubeconfig \
reg.mini.dev/argo-cli-fips delete my-workflow

Technical Considerations

The Argo CLI FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Argo CLI FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as non-root by default as user 1000. The public image runs as user argocd.
  2. Starts with the entrypoint argo and a null CMD. The public image has a null entrypoint and a CMD with "/bin/sh", "-c", "${BINARY}".
  3. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
