Apollo Router Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened Apollo Router image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
Apollo Router is a high-performance graph router written in Rust that runs your federated GraphQL supergraph. It sits in front of your subgraphs, composing them into a single graph, planning and executing incoming queries across services, and enforcing things like authentication, rate limiting, and observability at the edge.
Technical Considerations
The Apollo Router image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
Apollo Router built by Minimus:
- Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks.
- Listens on port 4000/TCP for GraphQL traffic and 8088/TCP for the health check endpoint. The image does not expose these ports.
- Reads its configuration from
/dist/config/router.yamlby default, set via theAPOLLO_ROUTER_CONFIG_PATHenvironment variable. The supergraph schema path is not set by default — pass it with--supergraph/APOLLO_ROUTER_SUPERGRAPH_PATH, or connect to GraphOS withAPOLLO_KEYandAPOLLO_GRAPH_REF. Command-line arguments passed todocker runare forwarded directly to the router binary. - Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
