Apigee-Microgateway-FIPS Overview

Secure your stack with a hardened, FIPS-validated Apigee Microgateway image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.


Use this Apigee-Microgateway-FIPS image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection.


FIPS 140-3 Certification

This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.

To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.


Try It Out

For a quick test, print the help menu:

docker run --rm --entrypoint edgemicro reg.mini.dev/apigee-microgateway-fips --help

Start the Gateway

Starting the gateway requires an Apigee Edge organization with Edge Microgateway configured. Run edgemicro configure against your org to obtain a key and secret, then start the gateway:

docker run -d --name apigee-microgateway -p 8000:8000 \
  -e EDGEMICRO_ORG=<your_org> \
  -e EDGEMICRO_ENV=<your_env> \
  -e EDGEMICRO_KEY=<your_key> \
  -e EDGEMICRO_SECRET=<your_secret> \
  reg.mini.dev/apigee-microgateway-fips

Confirm the gateway is listening on port 8000:

docker logs apigee-microgateway

Clean Up

docker stop apigee-microgateway
docker rm apigee-microgateway

Technical Considerations

The Apigee-Microgateway-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.

Apigee-Microgateway-FIPS built by Minimus:

  1. Runs as a non-root user by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks.
  2. Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.

The Payoff

A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
