SpiceDB Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened SpiceDB image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
SpiceDB is an open-source permissions database inspired by Google Zanzibar. It enables developers to define and enforce fine-grained, relationship-based access control across distributed systems with low-latency permission checks.
Try It Out
Run SpiceDB in testing mode using an in-memory backend — no external database or configuration required.
Prerequisites
- Docker installed and running
zedCLI installed (Installation instructions)
Step 1: Start SpiceDB
Run SpiceDB in testing mode. The server accepts any pre-shared key in this mode:
docker run -d --rm -p 50051:50051 reg.mini.dev/spicedb serve-testingStep 2: Connect with zed
Point the zed CLI at the local server:
zed context set local localhost:50051 anykey --insecureStep 3: Write a Schema
Define a simple document permission model:
zed schema write --schema 'definition user {}
definition document {
relation reader: user
permission view = reader
}'Step 4: Verify
Next, we will create a relationship and check a permission to verify the container.
Grant a user access to a document:
zed relationship create document:readme reader user:emiliaVerify the permission:

Technical Considerations
The SpiceDB image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
SpiceDB built by Minimus:
- Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
