Prometheus-FIPS Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened, FIPS-validated Prometheus image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies.
Use Prometheus to set up your own monitoring infrastructure. Prometheus is a systems and service monitoring system that collects metrics, and alerts on rules.
FIPS 140-3 Certification
This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.
To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.
Try It Out
Take the Minimus Prometheus image for a test run:
docker run --name minimus-prometheus -d \
-p 127.0.0.1:9090:9090 \
reg.mini.dev/prometheus-fips \
--config.file=/etc/prometheus/prometheus.yml This command will start the Prometheus server and map port 9090 (the default) in the Prometheus container to port 9090 on the host.
Visit the landing page at http://localhost:9090 in your browser.
Ready to replace the default configuration file with your own?
You can mount a config file of your own.
Navigate to the relevant directory (where your configuration file is) and run the following command to mount your .yml file and override the container's default. The read-only flag :ro is a standard best practice. You can reference the configuration doc and sample configuration file.
docker run --name minimus-prometheus -d \
-p 127.0.0.1:9090:9090 \
-v /path/to/local/prometheus.yml:/etc/prometheus.yml:ro \
reg.mini.dev/prometheus-fipsTechnical Considerations
The Prometheus-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
Prometheus-FIPS built by Minimus:
- Runs as non-root by default as user 1000. The public image runs as nobody by default.
- Listens on port 9090/TCP by default without exposing it. The public image listens on and exposes port 9090/TCP by default.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
