Plural Git Server-FIPS Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened Plural Git Server-FIPS image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
Plural Git Server is a lightweight git server used by the Plural platform to host and serve the configuration repositories that drive GitOps-based deployments. It provides the git backend that the Plural Console and deployment controller pull from when reconciling cluster state.
FIPS 140-3 Certification
This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.
To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.
Try It Out
Verify the image and confirm the available flags:
docker run --rm \
reg.mini.dev/plural-git-server-fips \
--helpSSH Key Exchange Compatibility
OpenSSH ≥ 9.9 advertises mlkem768x25519-sha256 as its preferred key exchange algorithm by default. The FIPS cryptographic module used in this image does not support ML-KEM, so the SSH handshake silently closes before completing — with no error message on the client side.
To work around this, restrict the SSH client to NIST ECDH key exchange algorithms, which the FIPS module does support. Add the following to ~/.ssh/config on the machine you connect from, replacing <your-plural-git-server-host> with the hostname or IP of the server:
Host <your-plural-git-server-host>
KexAlgorithms ecdh-sha2-nistp256,ecdh-sha2-nistp384,ecdh-sha2-nistp521The KexAlgorithms directive limits the algorithms the SSH client offers during the handshake. The Host line scopes it to that server only, so your other SSH connections are unaffected.
To apply the restriction per-command instead, without modifying ~/.ssh/config:
ssh -o KexAlgorithms=ecdh-sha2-nistp256,ecdh-sha2-nistp384,ecdh-sha2-nistp521 -p <port> <user>@<host>
GIT_SSH_COMMAND='ssh -o KexAlgorithms=ecdh-sha2-nistp256,ecdh-sha2-nistp384,ecdh-sha2-nistp521' git clone ssh://<user>@<host>:<port>/<repo>Technical Considerations
The Plural Git Server-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
Plural Git Server-FIPS built by Minimus:
- Runs as non-root by default.
- Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
