PHP-FIPS Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened FIPS-validated PHP image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
Use this PHP-FIPS image when you need to meet the requirements for FIPS-validated cryptographic protection. PHP apps often require Composer for third-party dependencies, so you'll want to use latest-dev for the build stage. See our PHP-FPM tutorial and multi-stage build guide for more information.
FIPS 140-3 Certification
This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.
To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.
Try It Out
To take the Minimus PHP image for a test run, we will need a simple PHP script and a Dockerfile to build our PHP app.
Save the following code to a new Dockerfile in your project directory:
FROM reg.mini.dev/php:latest-dev
WORKDIR /app
COPY . .
ENTRYPOINT ["composer", "run-script", "my-custom-script"]In same directory, save the code below to a file and name it composer.json:
{
"scripts": {
"my-custom-script": "php index.php"
}
}Next, still in the same directory, save the following sample PHP script to a file and name it index.php:
<?php
echo "Hello from PHP powered by Minimus!";
$currentTime = date("Y-m-d H:i:s");
echo "<br>Current time is: " . $currentTime;
?>Your project directory should now look like this:
project-root/
├── Dockerfile
└── composer.json
└── index.phpNext, build and run the custom image. Note that the period . specifies the current directory as the build context:
docker build -t minimus-composer-php-script .
docker run minimus-composer-php-scriptYou should get a Minimus greeting with the current time. You can replace the index.php file with your own script and run it.
Technical Considerations
The PHP-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
PHP-FIPS built by Minimus:
- Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks. The public image runs as root.
- The default working directory is
/app. The public image working directory defaults to the root directory. - Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
