nginx
NGINX Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened NGINX image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies.
Use this image to set up a web server, reverse proxy server, load balancer, HTTP cache, or whenever else NGINX is needed.
Try It Out
Take the Minimus NGINX image for a test run:
docker run -d --name minimus-nginx \
-p 80:8080 \
reg.mini.dev/nginxThis command will start the NGINX server and map port 8080 in the NGINX container to port 80 on the host.
Visit http://localhost in your browser to view the default NGINX hello world page. If you're working in a VM, run curl ifconfig.me to look up your external IP and substitute it like this: http://{IP}.
As a next step, learn how to replace the default configuration file with your own.
Technical Considerations
The NGINX image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
NGINX built by Minimus:
- Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks.
- Listens on port 8080/TCP by default to support running as a non-root user, but it does not expose the port. The public image listens on and exposes port 80/TCP by default.
- Starts up directly in NGINX (The entrypoint is
/bin/nginx) so you may need to update your run command. About Minimus entrypoints - The production image does not include a shell. If you prefer, you can use the dev image for additional baked-in dev tools. About dev images
- Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
