nats
NATS Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened NATS image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
Use the NATS container image to run a high-performance, cloud-native messaging server for building distributed systems with lightweight publish/subscribe communication.
Try It Out
To take the Minimus NATS image for a test run, follow the steps below:
Step 1 - Install the NATS CLI
First, make sure the NATS CLI is installed on your machine:
nats --versionIf the NATS CLI needs to be installed on your machine, follow the installation instructions from https://github.com/nats-io/natscli#installation.
Step 2 - Start a NATS Server with Docker
Run a NATS server using the lightweight Minimus container image:
docker run -it --rm -p 4222:4222 \
reg.mini.dev/nats -DVOnce started, look for the confirmation in the logs that the server is ready:
[1] .... [INF] Server is readyStep 3 - Publish a Message with NATS CLI
Open a new terminal and publish a message using the following command:
nats pub my_cluster "Hello from Minimus" --server nats://localhost:4222Switch back to the first terminal where the NATS server is running. You should see a log entry confirming the message was received, for example:
[1] ... [TRC] 172.17.0.1:45106 - cid:7 - <<- MSG_PAYLOAD: ["Hello from Minimus"]Technical Considerations
The NATS image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
NATS built by Minimus:
- Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks. The public image runs as root.
- Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
