Docker-DIND Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened Docker-DIND image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
Docker-in-Docker (DinD) is a technique for running Docker containers inside another Docker container. DinD is commonly used in containerized CI workflows.
Try It Out
Take the Minimus Docker-DIND image for a test run:
Step 1: Start the DIND container
docker run -d \
--privileged \
-p 2376:2376 \
reg.mini.dev/docker-dindThe --privileged flag is required for the Docker daemon to run inside another container. Mapping port 2376 exposes the Docker API.
Step 2: Copy the certificates
Copy server certificate
docker cp YOUR_CONTAINER_ID:/certs/server/ca.pem ./dind-certs/server-ca.pem
Copy client certificates
docker cp sad_northcutt:/certs/ ./dind-certs/
Step 3: Test you docker-dind
Now you can test your docker-dind container with the following commands:
Check docker version:
curl --cacert ./dind-certs/server-ca.pem \
--cert ./dind-certs/client/cert.pem \
--key ./dind-certs/client/key.pem \
https://localhost:2376/versionPull docker image:
curl -X POST --cacert ./dind-certs/server-ca.pem \
--cert ./dind-certs/client/cert.pem \
--key ./dind-certs/client/key.pem \
"https://localhost:2376/images/create?fromImage=reg.mini.dev/docker-dind&tag=latest"List the image you just downloaded:
curl --cacert ./dind-certs/server-ca.pem \
--cert ./dind-certs/client/cert.pem \
--key ./dind-certs/client/key.pem \

The Docker-DIND image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
Docker-DIND built by Minimus:
- Runs as root to support required functions. The public image also runs as root.
- Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
