Apache APISIX-FIPS Overview
Secure your stack with a FIPS-validated, hardened Apache APISIX image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
Apache APISIX is a dynamic, real-time, high-performance API gateway built on NGINX and LuaJIT. It supports dynamic routing, load balancing, authentication, rate limiting, and observability that are configurable at runtime without service restarts.
FIPS 140-3 Certification
This image is FIPS-validated to ensure its cryptographic operations meet the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) required for secure government and regulated environments. Its core cryptographic modules are validated under the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) and comply with the FIPS 140-3 standard.
To verify that the FIPS 140-3 provider is configured and active, follow the instructions in the FIPS compliance tab.
Try It Out
Apache APISIX supports a standalone deployment mode that reads routes and upstreams from a local YAML file.
In your project directory, save the following to a new file named config.yaml:
deployment:
role: data_plane
role_data_plane:
config_provider: yamlThen save the following to a new file named apisix.yaml. This defines a route that forwards /get requests to the public httpbin.org service:
routes:
- id: 1
uri: /get
upstream:
nodes:
- host: httpbin.org
port: 80
weight: 1
type: roundrobin
#ENDRun the Minimus APISIX-FIPS container from the directory containing both files:
docker run -d \
--name minimus-apisix-fips \
-p 9080:9080 \
-v $(pwd)/config.yaml:/usr/local/apisix/conf/config.yaml \
-v $(pwd)/apisix.yaml:/usr/local/apisix/conf/apisix.yaml \
reg.mini.dev/apache-apisix-fipsTest the route:
curl http://localhost:9080/getYou should see a JSON response from httpbin.org confirming that APISIX is proxying requests correctly.
Technical Considerations
The Apache APISIX-FIPS image provided by Minimus is a FIPS-validated, slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
Apache APISIX-FIPS built by Minimus:
- Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks.
- Listens on ports 9080/TCP (HTTP) and 9443/TCP (HTTPS) for proxy traffic, and 9180/TCP for the Admin API. The image does not expose these ports.
- Supports standalone deployment mode. Routes and upstreams are read from a mounted
apisix.yamlfile, removing the dependency on etcd for simple single-node setups. - Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
