amazon-corretto-jre
Amazon-Corretto-JRE Overview
Secure your stack with a hardened Amazon-Corretto-JRE image freshly-built by Minimus. Minimus images always include the most up-to-date package version for all packages and dependencies contained in the image.
Amazon Corretto is a binary distribution of OpenJDK (Open Java Development Kit) with patches included by Amazon. Corretto is certified using the Java Technical Compatibility Kit (TCK) to ensure it meets the Java SE standard.
Try It Out
To take the Minimus Amazon-Corretto-JRE image for a test run, we will use both Amazon-Corretto-JDK and Amazon-Corretto-JRE in a Dockerfile to keep the build and runtime environments separate and include only the compiled .class in the final image.
First, create 2 files in your directory:
- Dockerfile
- HelloCorretto.java
Save the following code to your Dockerfile:
# === Build Stage ===
FROM reg.mini.dev/amazon-corretto-jdk AS builder
COPY HelloCorretto.java /home/build/
WORKDIR /home/build/
RUN javac -d /home/build HelloCorretto.java
# === Runtime Stage ===
FROM reg.mini.dev/amazon-corretto-jre
COPY --from=0 /home/build/HelloCorretto.class /app/
WORKDIR /app/
CMD ["java", "HelloCorretto"]Save the following Java code to the file HelloCorretto.java. Note that for Java to compile properly, the filename must match the public class name, so be sure to save the file as HelloCorretto.java:
class HelloCorretto
{
public static void main(String args[])
{
System.out.println("Welcome to Minimus Amazon Corretto!");
System.out.println("Java version: " + System.getProperty("java.version"));
}
}Next, build the custom image and run it. Note that the period . specifies the current directory as the build context:
docker build -t minimus-corretto-app .
docker run minimus-corretto-appYou should see the greeting Welcome to Minimus Amazon Corretto! along with the Java version in your terminal.
Technical Considerations
The Amazon-Corretto-JRE image provided by Minimus is a slim, security-hardened alternative to the public image from Docker Hub. The images are largely interchangeable, with a few differences as noted below.
Amazon-Corretto-JRE built by Minimus:
- Runs as non-root by default for a security-first approach that protects against privilege escalation attacks.
- Drill down on the version specification tab to see the default user, listening ports, entrypoint, volumes, environment variables, etc.
The Payoff
A hardened, minimal image that will remain more secure for the long run and accrue vulnerabilities at a slower rate.
- See the risk reduction dashboard for a detailed CVE comparison over the past 30 days.
- Review the compliance report to see the default hardening and security configurations for the image.
